THE THEORY TEST
(includes sample questions)
The theory test must be passed before a learner driver applies for a practical driving
test. There are theory test centres in Watford, Luton and Stevenage as well as other
U.K. towns.
To apply for a theory test you must hold a valid GB or NI provisional
driving licence.
When you attend the test you will be asked to produce your driving
licence (make sure it is signed), if you have the older type you will need a valid
passport or some other form of identity with a photograph and signature. If you do
not have these items you cannot take the test and you will lose your fee.
The test
consists of a hazard perception exercise which comprises a selection of film clips
showing real road scenes and potential hazards. You will be assessed on how soon
you spot the dangers. This will be followed by 50 multiple choice questions, the
minimum pass mark is 43, the time allotted is 60 minutes. Candidates can go back
on any questions before finalising the test and have the opportunity of a fifteen
minute practice session before taking the actual test. The result of the test will
be given before leaving the centre. You must pass both elements to pass your test.
Various
publications are available to assist you, including The Highway Code, Driving Manual
and The Official Theory Test. These can be obtained at most good book shops, driving
instructors normally keep a supply of these books which can usually be purchased
or loaned.
STUDY AND PRACTICE GO HAND IN HAND, DO NOT TREAT THEM AS TWO DIFFERENT
SUBJECTS.
